Police to assist CBI in attaching assets owned by ex-MP Atiq Ahmed’s son Umar
PRAYAGRAJ, October 25 (HS): Following a court order for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to seize the properties of mafia turned politician and former MP Atiq Ahmad’s son Umar, Prayagraj police will now aid the CBI in locating his assets in the area. Virendra Yadav, inspector and station house officer (SHO) of Khuldabad police station told HS, “All cooperation will be offered to the CBI team in tracing Umar and taking further action as required by the court.” Umar, who was wanted in the kidnapping and assault of a Lucknow-based realtor inside Deoria jail a few years ago, is still at large. He was charged with a crime and a reward of Rs. 2 lakh was offered for his arrest.
Umar is the eldest son of former MP Atiq Ahmad, and he campaigned for him when Atiq contested bypolls for the Phulpur Loksabha constituency in 2018. He was languishing in Naini Central Jail and later transferred to Sabarmati jail in Ahemdabad. However, a Lucknow-based realtor, Mohit Agarwal, said that Umar and his associates kidnapped him from his home and carried him to Deoria Jail, where Atiq attacked him and forced him to transfer his assets. Umar’s name was erased from the FIR during the investigation in Lucknow.
The investigation was handed over to the CBI by the Supreme Court in April 2019, after which a new case was filed against 12 people, including Atiq, his son Umar, and accomplices Zaki, Faruq, Gulam Sarwar, Zafar Ullah, and others, in connection with the incident. Hundreds of residential and commercial structures owned by Atiq Ahmad and his gang members were demolished by joint teams of administration, police, and PDA officials during the crackdown on Atiq Ahmad and his gang members. While the police inquiry discovered numerous of Atiq’s and his close colleagues’ properties, none of Umar’s were located or seized.
According to police officials, properties owned by Atiq and his accomplices, as well as some of his relatives, were identified and action was taken against them. Umar was not included in the investigation because no charges had been filed against him in Pryagaraj. According to police, CBI officials have conducted separate investigations into Umar and may have discovered movable and immovable assets he owns.
