PM Modi begins landmark Jordan visit, signals push for deeper economic and strategic ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Amman on Monday to begin a two-day visit to Jordan. The trip aims to expand political, economic, and people-to-people ties. Importantly, the visit comes at a historic moment in bilateral relations.
To begin with, Jordan accorded Modi a warm and ceremonial welcome. Prime Minister Jafar Hassan received him at the airport, underscoring the closeness between the two nations. The gesture reflected mutual respect and long-standing goodwill.
Soon after his arrival, Modi shared his message on social media. He thanked Prime Minister Hassan for the welcome. He also expressed confidence that the visit would strengthen bilateral linkages. The message set the tone for a forward-looking engagement.
Notably, this visit holds special significance. An Indian prime minister has undertaken a full bilateral visit to Jordan after a gap of 37 years. At the same time, both countries mark 75 years of diplomatic relations. Therefore, officials on both sides see the trip as symbolic and strategic.
Meanwhile, Jordan marks the first stop of Modi’s four-day, three-nation tour. After Amman, he will travel to Ethiopia and Oman. Through this itinerary, India seeks to deepen engagement with key partners in West Asia and Africa.
In a parallel message, Jordan’s Prime Minister also welcomed Modi publicly. He described India as a valued partner. He highlighted the durability of ties over seven decades. Furthermore, he expressed interest in expanding cooperation, especially in economic, investment, and technology sectors.
After reaching his hotel, Modi met members of the Indian community. He greeted them personally and interacted with families and workers. Local artists performed Indian classical and folk dances. As a result, the reception showcased India’s cultural heritage abroad.
Later in the day, Modi will meet King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein. The leaders will first hold a one-on-one meeting. Subsequently, they will lead delegation-level talks. These discussions will cover regional stability, trade, investment, and strategic cooperation.
On Tuesday, Modi and King Abdullah will jointly address an India–Jordan business event. Leading business figures from both countries will attend. The forum aims to encourage investments and explore new commercial partnerships.
In addition, Modi will interact again with the Indian diaspora. He will also visit Petra with the Crown Prince, subject to weather conditions. Petra holds historical importance, as ancient trade routes once connected it with India.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this marks Modi’s first full bilateral visit to Jordan. In 2018, he had only transited through the country while traveling to Palestine. However, even then, King Abdullah extended exceptional courtesies.
From an economic perspective, India and Jordan maintain strong trade ties. India ranks as Jordan’s third-largest trading partner. Bilateral trade stands at about USD 2.8 billion. Jordan supplies key fertilisers to India, including phosphates and potash.
Finally, Jordan hosts a vibrant Indian diaspora of over 17,500 people. Many work in textiles, construction, and manufacturing. Their presence continues to serve as a bridge between the two nations.
