Himachal Pradesh is rapidly adopting solar energy under the PM Energy Free Electricity House Scheme. So far, 1,54,497 people have registered for the initiative, aiming to reduce electricity costs and promote clean energy. The State Electricity Board has approved 5,359 applications, installing solar power plants in 1,152 houses with a total capacity of 4,052 kW. The goal is to equip 90,000 homes with solar energy by 2027.

Government Pushes Solar Expansion

The central government has provided a ₹6.85 crore subsidy, distributed through the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Board. This subsidy helps beneficiaries install solar panels, cutting down electricity expenses while encouraging self-reliance in power generation.

Kangra Leads in Solar Installations

Among districts, Kangra has the highest number of installations, with 382 houses now running on solar power. Other districts following include:

  • Mandi: 153 houses
  • Chamba: 25 houses
  • Shimla: 15 houses
  • Lahaul-Spiti: 1 house

More applications are pouring in as residents seek to benefit from the scheme. Authorities plan to install solar plants in thousands of homes in the coming months.

How the Scheme Works

Homeowners can apply online or through the electricity board to get subsidies for solar panel installation. Approved applicants receive financial support to set up solar power, reducing dependence on grid electricity. This initiative particularly benefits rural areas with unstable power supply, ensuring households generate their own energy.

Green Energy for a Sustainable Future

Installing solar panels lowers electricity costs, reduces carbon footprints, and boosts domestic power production. Himachal Pradesh aims to accelerate installations to meet the 2027 target, making solar energy accessible to more homes. The government is committed to expanding the scheme, helping citizens switch to affordable and sustainable power.
