Passenger Train Crashes Into Goods Train in Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin ‘Shocked’
A passenger train traveling at 75 kmph crashed into a stationary goods train in Tamil Nadu at 8:30 pm on Friday. The impact caused 12 coaches to derail, injuring several passengers. A power car caught fire. The Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express hit the goods train at Kavaraippettai station near Chennai.
Tiruvallur District Collector Dr. T Prabhushankar confirmed that 1,360 passengers were on board, with 19 injured, including four with severe injuries. Rescue teams rushed the injured to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.
By midnight, buses transported stranded passengers to Dr. MGR Chennai Central. Early the next morning, a special train took them to their destinations. Food and water were provided. Commissioner of Railway Safety Anant Madhukar Chowdhary visited the site for an investigation. Sniffer dogs aided in the inspection.
Southern Railway GM R N Singh explained that the train, headed toward Gudur, entered the loop line instead of the main line, leading to the collision. Despite receiving a main-line signal, the train veered off course and struck the goods train from behind.
Several trains were diverted, rescheduled, or canceled after the accident, with 18 trains canceled for October 12. Railway officials have ordered a high-level inquiry.
Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed shock and assured the public that rescue and relief efforts were underway. He emphasized that the injured were receiving immediate care, and arrangements for the other passengers were in place. Rail services are expected to resume within 24 hours, by Saturday evening.
