Kolkata, 25 March (HS) ;Violating the strict government orders asking everybody to remain indoors, over 1010 people have been arrested in Kolkata and elsewhere in West Bengal and charged under various legal provisions including the possibility of  facing a jail term of up to six months since last night.
Though Prime minister Narendra Modi in his televised address to the Nation last night had made it amply clear the importance of the 21 day nationwide locked down from midnight of 24/25 March and that all violations would be met with strict penal action, large number of people were seen roaming in different areas of the city and elsewhere in the state in every district violating the prohibitory orders.
Though the police in most cases warned these people and asked them to return home immediately, some of these people deliberately violated them even after that. They were immediately arrested as per law, the police said adding that so far their total number stood at 1010.
Meanwhile,City Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma sending repeated  messages through his twitter handle have been urging the people to remain in their homes and abide by the rules for the sake of their own safety and that for their families. But unfortunately large number of people, for reasons best known to them, refused to pay any heed to these appeals and came out from their house for no specific reasons and started roaming on the empty streets carelessly with their friends..
Though the police initially tried to ward off the cord by requesting them to return home, later finding no other alternative they had to resort to lathi charge in several localities to disperse the large crowd besides arresting many.
As a result the number of such gatheirngs has now come down substantially since this morning providing a huge relief to the state authorities and the police.
However, like yesterday, considerable gathering was witnessed in several  daily markets and in front of local kirana stores as the people went there to purchase their daily essentials.
But as the day progressed such assembly of people vanished as they have now decided to keep themselves indoors,as directed by the Prime minister. .
As a result, like rest of India, the entire city of Kolkata now wears a complete deserted look to help substantially reduce the chances of the spread of CODIV-19 further.
