Starting January 1, 2025, over 6,000 government institutes in India will gain access to more than 13,000 international journals through the Centre’s new ‘One Nation, One Subscription’ (ONOS) initiative. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), shared details of the project at a press conference on Tuesday.

The initiative will roll out in three phases. The first phase will grant government institutes access to 13,400 scholarly articles from top international publishers like Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley. In the second phase, private institutes will gradually be included, with a potential small fee. Finally, phase three aims to provide universal access via public libraries.

“This initiative includes not only science but also management, social sciences, and humanities journals,” Karandikar noted. The government has already secured agreements with 30 major publishers to support the program. Senior DST officials revealed that while phase one is being implemented, discussions are underway regarding the inclusion of private institutions.

The ONOS initiative is set to transform access to global research, benefiting students, faculty, and researchers across disciplines.
