Haldia(East Midnapore)/Kolkata,04 April(HS): A middle-aged employee of a contractor of public sector Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) in Haldia, the port town of East Midnapore District, who took part in the recent religious congregation at Nizamuddin in New Delhi, today tested positive of COVID-19, causing concern to the district administration about steps to prevent the spread of the disease.
According to top sources at KoPT here this afternoon, the person who returned to Haldia from Nizamuddin on 24 March might have visited the docks a number of times since his return though there was no activity or work in the entire dock area because of the strict imposition of locked down since 20 March.
However, they said after the Nizamudding incident came to light the person was immediately tested at the local municipality and following the confirmation of his multiple test reports it was found that he had indeed been suffering from Coronavirus.
While he was immediately sent to self-isolation, strict instruction was issued at the dock against the entry of all contract labourers there as it was suspected that some of them might have also contacted the disease after they came in contact with the latest victim.
Reiterating that as preventive steps all officers and other employees at the Haldia dock area had already been quarantined for two weeks and the entire area had been sanitised several times, the sources, however, made it clear that all emergency operations under Haldia Port Trust areas including the supply of all essential commodities and other port operations were being maintained round the clock under strict surveillance.
Incidentally with the confirmation of this one more patient suffering from COVID-19, the total number of those found suffering from the disease in West Bengal has now gone up to 39  so far. Another 12 people have returned home till yesterday after recovering from the disease and remaining in self quarantined for two weeks, the Chief Minister informed adding that so far over 5,000 tests had been conducted in the state among the suspects.
