Northern India and Delhi hit by record-breaking cold wave
Northern India, including the national capital, is grappling with a severe cold wave. Temperatures have dropped to 4.8°C, the lowest this season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the temperature in Delhi could dip further to 4°C on Thursday.
Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana are also experiencing cold wave conditions. On Wednesday, fresh snowfall was reported in Jammu and Kashmir. The IMD forecasts a mostly clear sky, with cold wave conditions expected at isolated locations for Thursday and Friday. Smog and mist are likely in the morning and evening.
This drastic drop in temperature is unusual for December. The last time temperatures fell below 5°C in the region was 14 years ago. According to IMD data, the lowest recorded temperature on December 6, 1987, was 4.1°C.
The weather agency has also predicted similar conditions for Saturday, with a decrease in wind speed during the evening and night. The cold wave is expected to persist for the next few days. Authorities have advised people to take precautions to stay warm and safe during this unusual cold snap.
