Bihar politics may soon witness a new entrant from the Kumar family. Sources said that Nishant Kumar, son of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, will likely become the Janata Dal (United) nominee for the Rajya Sabha. The party has also decided to retain senior leader Ramnath Thakur.

The development came shortly after senior JD(U) leader and Bihar minister Sharwan Kumar indicated that Nishant’s entry into active politics stands finalised. He told reporters that the party will make a formal announcement within a day or two. He added that party workers have demanded Nishant’s political debut for several years. According to him, supporters feel enthusiastic about the move, especially ahead of Holi.

Furthermore, Sharwan Kumar said the party plans to assign Nishant a bigger responsibility. He noted that leaders will soon decide the exact role. When reporters asked whether the party may send Nishant to the Rajya Sabha, he replied that anything can happen. His remarks strengthened speculation about a nomination to Parliament’s Upper House.

Meanwhile, discussions about Nishant Kumar’s political future have intensified since the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured a decisive mandate in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. The alliance victory reshaped the state’s political landscape. After that result, party insiders began to openly discuss generational leadership within JD(U).

Earlier, in December 2025, JD(U) working president Sanjay Jha addressed the issue in Nishant’s presence. He stated that party members and supporters want Nishant to actively work for the organisation. However, he clarified that Nishant himself must decide the timing of his formal entry.

At present, Nishant Kumar has maintained a low public profile. Unlike many political heirs, he has not actively campaigned or held party posts. However, he often accompanies his father during select public events. Over time, party cadres have urged the leadership to bring him into organisational roles.

JD(U) leaders believe that a Rajya Sabha berth could offer Nishant national exposure without immediate involvement in state-level electoral politics. Such a move may also allow him to understand parliamentary procedures and policy debates before taking on a larger role in Bihar.

At the same time, the decision reflects Nitish Kumar’s continued influence within the party. As a long-serving chief minister, he has shaped JD(U)’s political direction for nearly two decades. Now, observers see this moment as a possible transition phase within the party.

However, the party has not issued an official confirmation yet. Leaders have indicated that a final announcement may come soon. Until then, political circles in Patna and Delhi continue to watch closely.

If JD(U) nominates Nishant Kumar to the Rajya Sabha, it will mark his formal entry into public life. The move could also signal the party’s long-term strategy as it prepares for future electoral battles in Bihar and beyond.
