‘Next game, 40/6?’: Jofra Archer calls India batters ‘lucky’ despite 7-wicket triumph

Jofra Archer, England’s pacer, credited India’s batters with luck during their seven-wicket win in the first T20I at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Despite delivering an impressive spell of 2/21 in four overs, Archer couldn’t stop India from chasing down a modest target of 132.
Post-match, Archer reflected on the game, saying, “The conditions favored me, but the batters were extremely lucky. Many balls went in the air but didn’t reach fielders. Maybe next game, they’re 40/6.” He stressed the importance of trying to break through early in the innings, noting England’s effort to destabilize India’s top order.
India’s batters, however, stayed composed and controlled the chase. Archer defended England’s modest total, emphasizing that teams must attempt early breakthroughs to influence the middle overs. “You’ve got to try. It didn’t work this time, but we’ll try again next game,” he said.
Archer’s fiery opening spell included an aggressive tactic with Jos Buttler positioned at short leg to unsettle Indian batters. Speaking on this, Archer remarked, “It’s there for the theatre, to mess with the batter’s mind and add some flair to the game.”
Looking ahead, Archer is preparing for a packed schedule, including the IPL, Champions Trophy, and potentially returning to Test cricket. He confirmed plans for a gradual return to the format, prioritizing the current T20I series. “Let’s get through this series first, then focus on what’s next,” he said. Archer remains England’s key weapon for the Ashes later this year, with hopes pinned on his pace and bounce.
