Netanyahu advances Hamas ceasefire talks amid lingering uncertainty
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed progress in ceasefire negotiations with Hamas but cautioned against expecting immediate results. Speaking at a Knesset session, he acknowledged the ongoing efforts while admitting uncertainty about the timeline. “We will do everything to bring everyone home,” he assured.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar outlined the deal’s phased approach, including a humanitarian ceasefire and hostage releases. Reports indicate mediation by Qatar, Egypt, and the U.S. has moved talks forward, but no breakthrough has occurred. Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli also highlighted partial progress in negotiations.
The ceasefire’s duration remains a sticking point. Hamas seeks an end to hostilities, while Israel aims to dismantle Hamas’ control over Gaza and maintain a military presence. The conflict began on October 7, 2023, with a Hamas-led attack killing 1,200 Israelis and kidnapping 250 people. Some hostages have since been released, but about 100 remain captive, with some feared dead.
Israel’s response included widespread airstrikes, causing over 45,000 casualties and extensive destruction in Gaza. Meanwhile, international mediators continue working to finalize an agreement as tensions persist.
