Narendra Giri death: Anand Giri, Adya Tiwari sent to 14 days judicial remand
PRAYAGRAJ, September 23 (HS): The chief judicial magistrate (CJM) court in Prayagraj sentenced Anand Giri and Adya Prasad Tiwari to a 14-day judicial remand on Wednesday, accusing them of aiding and abetting the suicide of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP) president Mahant Narendra Giri. They were then transferred to the Naini Central Prison.
On Monday evening, Narendra Giri’s body was discovered hanging from the ceiling of his room in Shri Math Baghambari Gaddi, which is within the jurisdiction of the Georgetown police station in the city. In his suicide letter, the mahant accused Anand Giri, as well as two others, namely Adya Prasad Tiwari, the priest of Bade Hanuman temple, and his son Sandeep Tiwari, of mental torture.
On Monday night, on the complaint of a math employee, Amar Giri Pawan Maharaj, the police filed an FIR against Anand Giri with the Georgetown police station under section 306 of the IPC (abettment of suicide). Both the suspects ? Anand Giri and Adya Tiwari ? were brought before Chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Harendra Nath’s court on Wednesday amid tight security. Both of them were sent to jail after the CJM remanded them to judicial custody for 14 days.
The police also had the accused undergo a medical test at a government facility before presenting them at the CJM court.
Anand Giri was carried to the Reserve police line in Prayagraj from Haridwar by a team of UP police on Tuesday afternoon. Anand Giri, priest Adya Prasad Tiwari, and his son Sandeep Tiwari were arrested and questioned later. Anand Giri, Adya, and Sandeep had been interrogated for hours by a team of top police officers. Meanwhile, a five-member panel of doctors conducted a post-mortem on Narendra Giri at SRN hospital on Wednesday morning amid heavy security. The road leading to the postmortem house had been blocked by police. Autopsy filming was also carried out.
Though senior police officials remained tight-lipped, highly placed sources indicated that the mahant died of asphyxiation as a result of hanging. To investigate the death, an 18-member special investigation team (SIT) was formed, and it had already begun gathering evidence. Meanwhile, in Prayagraj on Wednesday, deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya informed reporters that “deep investigations are underway regarding the assassination of ABAP chief Narendra Giri, and the guilty will not be spared.” “All parts of the case are being investigated, and police are on the correct track,” said the deputy CM.
