Chandigarh, January 28 ( H.S.):Punjab’s Most Wanted Khalistani Terrorist of Khalistan Liberation Force’s Top Harmeet Singh alias Happy Ph.D ,who was involved in the murders of Hindu leaders in Punjab  and other incidents, was shot dead near Dera Chahal Gurdwara in Lahore, Pakistan, today in the morning . The incident is believed to be a gang-related case.

Officials said he was believed to have assumed the role of KLF chief after the outfit’s head, Harminder Mintoo, was held by Punjab Police from Thailand in 2014. Mintoo, who later escaped from the Nabha jail with a group of gangsters but was detained again, died of cardiac arrest in jail in April 2018.

Singh was a resident of Chheharta in Amritsar and had a doctorate that earned him the alias “PhD”. He was living in Pakistan for two decades.

In October, acting on India’s information, the Interpol issued “red notices” against at least eight Khalistan-linked terrorists based in different countries. Singh, alias “Happy PhD”, was in the list.

Singh, the Pakistan-based KLF handler, plotted to carry out an attack on the anniversary of the Operation Bluestar, which flushed out separatists from inside the Golden Temple in June 1984, according to police intelligence in 2019. The plan was foiled.Singh was also a suspect in the grenade attack on a prayer congregation at the Nirankari Bhawan in Rajasansi that left three persons dead and several injured in 2018.

According to reports, the mastermind – Harmeet Singh – had also planned and strategist the targeted killings of some socio-religious leaders in the state in 2016-17. Considered as self-styled chief of the KLF, after its former head – Harminder Mintoo – was held by state police from Thailand in 2014, Harmeet was a native of Amritsar and living in Pakistan for over two decades. Harmeet was  also a doctorate and had earned his name in the outfit due to this.

Among other cases registered in his name, Harmeet was also booked by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing the case related to the killings of different community leaders – especially right wing leaders.

Harmeet had been enjoying full-backing of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and he had been given the assignment of creating terror in Punjab by making pro-Khalistan modules. Using ISI’s network, Harmeet had developed strong links among terrorist groups active in Kashmir too and there were strong inputs that the Kashmiri groups may be roped in to create terror in Punjab.
