New Delhi, Dec 21 (HS): In support of the Citizenship Amendment Act, more than a thousand academics and intellectuals from different universities came out. They have all congratulated the Parliament for the newly amended citizenship law. While issuing a joint statement, they all said that there was a long demand for this law for refugees. These intellectuals have also expressed concern over the violent protests against this law in the country and appealed to the people to maintain peace.

In their statement, these academics said, “Congratulations to the Parliament for standing with the forgotten minorities. Among those who support, academics include Delhi University, JNU, IGNOU, many IITs and Indians who teach in many big institutions of the world. ‘We believe that CAA is in keeping with the Secular Constitution of India, as it does not prevent anyone of any religion from appealing for citizenship.’

According to the amended citizenship law, members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who came to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan as of 31 December 2014 will not be considered illegal refugees and will be granted citizenship in India. President Ram Nath Kovind gave his consent to the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 on Thursday night and with this the bill became law.
