Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, stated on Wednesday that the Modi government has become proactive in disaster management, unlike previous governments, which reacted only after disasters struck. Speaking at the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) 2024 event in New Delhi, Rai emphasized the need for agencies to work together to reduce risks and secure the future.

Addressing the inaugural session on “Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future,” Rai highlighted that, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the government now predicts disasters and takes preventive steps, minimizing damage. He pointed to Cyclone Biparjoy as an example, where timely action led to no loss of life.

Rai urged the youth to play a vital role in disaster management, stressing that educational institutions should train them for future challenges. He encouraged young people to use social media and technology to share disaster forecasts with the government, enhancing preparedness.

Several officials, including Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Higher Education Secretary Sanjay Murthy, School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar, and NIDM Executive Director Rajendra Ratnu, attended the event.
