Dehradun police launched a massive hunt after a speeding Mercedes killed four labourers and injured two on Mussoorie Road late Wednesday. Officers identified the car through CCTV footage and found it abandoned in an empty plot.

The vehicle had a Chandigarh registration and was reportedly bought from Delhi. A Dehradun police team reached the capital to investigate, while another team traveled to Chandigarh to trace the owner.

Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh said officers received an alert around 8:15 p.m. “We identified 11 vehicles that passed through the area and launched thorough inspections at all checkpoints to stop the suspect from fleeing,” he said.

The driver struck four pedestrians and a scooter. The deceased were Mansharam (30) and Ranjeet (35) from Ayodhya, Balkaran (40) from Barabanki, and Durgesh from Faizabad. The injured, Dhaniram from Hardoi and Mohammad Shakib from Sitamarhi, are undergoing treatment.

Emergency responders rushed the injured to Uttaranchal Hospital before shifting them to Doon Government Hospital. The deceased were sent for post-mortem.

Police launched an intensive checking drive, alerting all stations. The victims, daily wage workers, lived near the Kath Bangla riverbank and worked under a contractor.

Top police officials, including the Inspector General of Police, Garhwal Range, and the SSP, inspected the accident site and gathered details.

Rajpur police registered an FIR on Thursday morning based on a complaint from Mansharam’s relative, Sanjay Kumar. “My nephew and his companions were returning from work when a recklessly driven Mercedes with a Chandigarh registration hit them near Uttaranchal Hospital. They died on the spot. The driver also hit a scooter carrying two others, leaving them seriously injured, and then fled,” the complaint stated.

Police are intensifying efforts to track the driver and bring him to justice.
