Medical Council of India to be replaced by National Medical Commission
New Delhi, July.17 (HS): The National Medical Commission(NMC) Bill, 2019 has been approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday amid resistance by Indian Medical Association and others. This aims to bring about change with repeal of Indian Medical Council Act 1956 and other changes addressing contemporary issues in medical education in India.
If this bill goes through the parliament, NMC will comprise of four autonomous boards viz., Under Graduate Medical Education Board, Post-Graduate Medical Education Board, Medical Assessment and Rating Board and Ethics and Medical Registration Board to look after educational environment and grant permission to new medical colleges, to achieve global standards and to effectively handle grievances. Sufficient representation from states through state elected members will also be ensured.
National Medical Commission will also act as regulator in fees and other charges for half of the seats in private medical colleges and deemed universities. A system of rating for medical colleges world over will also be developed to facilitate selection decision by students.
The current system of NEET and AIIMS exams will be replaced by National Exit Test(NEXT) for obtaining license to practice in India. The exit test will also recognized as eligibility test for Post graduate medical courses and a screening test for foreign students.
