MCD removes encroachments along 53 km stretch
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) cleared a 53-kilometer stretch in an anti-encroachment drive across key areas. With police support, officials seized 453 items, including temporary structures, platforms, and other unauthorised setups.
Five truckloads of materials were confiscated during the operation, restoring public spaces to their intended use.
The drive covered locations like Shyama Prasad Mukherji Marg, Church Mission Road, Khari Baoli, and Arya Samaj Road. MCD Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Kumar Mishra highlighted the effort’s impact, stating, “This initiative promotes cleaner, safer spaces and ensures public areas remain accessible.” Residents reported noticeable improvements in cleanliness and accessibility following the crackdown.
Illegal encroachments have been a persistent issue for the MCD. Earlier, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) criticized the civic body for inadequate action on encroachments at Hauz Khas.
Similarly, the Delhi High Court urged authorities, including the MCD and DDA, to draft regulations for penalizing public land encroachers.
Flooding incidents, such as the July 27 Rajendra Nagar library basement tragedy, have highlighted the consequences of encroachments over drains. Justice Rajnish Bhatnagar stressed the importance of accountability, calling for strict measures against encroachers.
The MCD has pledged continued efforts to maintain public land and prevent future violations, reinforcing its commitment to safety and community welfare.
