Lucknow,June 19(HS)Ambedkar Nagar Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh was the only constituency in the state which failed to elected a member of the Yogi council of ministers, necessitating an Assembly  by-poll .Three other minister fielded have reached the Lok Sabha.

The constituency stands out for some other reasons as well. The ruling BJP fielded a  member of the state Assembly from this constituency, denying ticket to the sitting member.

Mukut Bihari Verma who was fielded was elected in the previous Assembly election from Kaiserganj which is one of the five Assembly segments of  Kaiserganj  Lok Sabha seat.Verma was minister for cooperation in the Yogi ministry.

The BJP chnged the war horse but the BSP backed Ritesh Pande although he had won from Jalalpur Assembly seat  by a small margin little over 13,000 votes in the previous poll.

Ambedkar Nagar Lok Sabha seat is also noteworthy for another reason. It has elected BSP chief Mayawati thrice. In all, the party has bagged this seat six times. From 2009 to 2014 it was held by the SP.In 2014 it was wrested by the BJP to surrender to the BSP in 2019.

The constituency has 23 per cent Dalits, more than the average in the state.Voters’ turn-out was more than 60 per cent which was also impressive.

In view of victory achieved by Jalalpur MLA in the general elections,by-election will have to be held in this Assembly constituency.Ten other seats will also go to the polls.

Of  the total 11, nine seats were won by the BJP.The SP and the BSP had won one each in 2017. As the BSP and the SP have separated, the fight is likely to be triangular in all these constituencies.Result will establish whether the alliance decision by the SP was right or wrong. In the just concluded general elections, the SP had suffered most from the alliance.

Mayawati has blamed the party itself for the suffering. Yadavs, according to her,the party’s traditional supporters, did not solidly back the party. She is making further  review and is likely to come out with her conclusion next Sunday. She is likely to work out a new strategy for the Assembly by-elections in the light of this review.
