Maya’s new decision was not a choice but compulsion
Lucknow,June 28(HS) Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati who is making one statement after another almost every day after defeat in general elections has said in one of them that she will contest all forthcoming elections alone.She has made it look like her choice.It is not. It is a compulsion.
She has burnt her boat and cannot return either to the SP or the BJP or the Congress.The only year she had fought alone and was successful was 2007 when she had formed a government.At all other times she had ruled with the help of one of these parties.
None of them is likely to back the party now either directly or indirectly.Can she form government on her own in UP again?.Going by her present support-base it appears to be a remote possibility.
The reason for these parties unlikely to join hands again is simple. None has found her dependable.All of them have been dumped by her at one time or the other.
Her party had allied with another major outfit for the first time in 1993.This was the year when there was a change in the party’s slogan against Brahmins,Thakurs and traders.Tilak,Taraju aur Talwar,inko maro jute char was archived.The party began wooing other castes.
It joined hands with then SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav before the state Assembly elections.The two parties were successful and a new government was formed in 1993 .The unmatched marriage did not last long.She withdrew support,facing SP workers wrath in Lucknow Guest House.The rest is known all over.
The BJP then became her new found love.The party sided with her to keep the rival SP out. But the separation was not far away. The saffron party forgot the past and united in 1997 to separate again .The unity was achieved through a new formula—alternate chief minister,each lasting six months.It worked well till she was at the helm of affairs.Trouble began when it was the BJP turn to rule.
The two reunited the third time in 2002 only to separate yet again after little more than a year.The BJP has not gone for her since then.In fact, both the BJP and the SP have distanced from her after early 2000.The SP went for her again this year only to learn a bitter lesson.
She has not been kind to the third major player,the Congress, either.She has equated it with the BJP and called the two, two sides of the same coin.Initially,she had talked to the party for alliance during Assembly elections in Hindi heartland but suddenly she dumped the party.In general elections,she allied with the SP and not the Congress in Madhya Pradesh. All the three,thus,have got something or the other against her.
