Markets open strong: Financials & metals lead the rally

The stock market opened strong on Thursday, February 27, 2025, with financial services and metal stocks leading the gains.
At 9:20 AM IST, the BSE Sensex rose 108.50 points (0.15%) to 74,710.62, while the NSE Nifty gained 37.30 points (0.17%) to reach 22,584.85.
Top Gainers and Losers IndusInd Bank led the Sensex gainers, rising 1.96% to trade at ₹1,054.00. Bajaj Finance followed with a 1.74% jump to ₹8,640.10, while Bajaj Finserv climbed 1.54% to ₹1,904.75. In total, 13 of the 30 Sensex stocks traded in the green.
Among Nifty sectoral indices, Nifty Financial Services Ex-Bank surged 1.12% to 25,115.00. Nifty Metal, Nifty Midsmall Financial Services, and Nifty Financial Services 25/50 also posted gains of 0.78%.
Previous Session Recap Markets remained closed on Wednesday due to Mahashivratri. On Tuesday, February 25, the Sensex lost 147.71 points (0.20%) to close at 74,602.12, while the Nifty dipped 5.80 points (0.03%) to end at 22,547.55.
“The Nifty ended lower for the sixth straight session, but the falling India VIX suggests investors see limited downside,” said Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research at Axis Securities. “Tuesday’s rebound attempt failed, creating a long upper shadow on the chart, signaling overhead resistance. Support lies between 22,370 and 22,500, while bulls need a close above 22,720 to target 23,050-23,280.”
FIIs continued selling, offloading ₹3,529.10 crore in equities, while DIIs bought ₹3,030.78 crore, helping absorb the pressure.
Market Trends and Concerns “Rising US bond yields, a stronger dollar, a weaker rupee, and stretched valuations have reduced Indian equities’ appeal for foreign investors,” said Akhil Puri, Partner at Forvis Mazars India. “FIIs are reallocating capital to the US and other attractive markets like China.”
Although DIIs cushioned the fall, continued FII selling could drag down stocks, pressure the rupee, and fuel inflation. “Disappointing earnings from key sectors like consumer staples, automobiles, and building materials have also raised concerns over corporate profitability,” Puri added.
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries led the Sensex losers, dropping 1.58% to ₹1,613.65. Power Grid Corporation fell 1.25% to ₹255.90, and Tata Consultancy Services slipped 1.19% to ₹3,631.10.
Mahindra & Mahindra led the gainers with a 2.61% rise to ₹2,780.15. Bharti Airtel followed, climbing 2.55% to ₹1,641.60, while Bajaj Finance added 1.65% to close at ₹8,492.40.
Among Nifty sectoral indices, Nifty Metal fell the most, dropping 1.54% to 8,293.45. Nifty Realty lost 1.31% to 826.65, while Nifty Midsmall IT & Telecom declined 1.22% to 5,880.75.
