Manchester City’s injury crisis worsened as defender Manuel Akanji will miss up to 10 weeks due to a thigh injury. Pep Guardiola confirmed this ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United.

Akanji suffered the injury during City’s 3-2 Champions League playoff loss to Real Madrid. He left the field at halftime, and after medical evaluations, the club decided on surgery. Guardiola announced that Akanji will undergo surgery on Saturday and could need up to 10 weeks for recovery.

“He has worked incredibly hard this season, but his body now needs a break,” Guardiola said. Despite Akanji’s setback, City received positive news about Jack Grealish. Guardiola stated that Grealish’s injury isn’t severe, though his availability for Newcastle remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, City will focus on their upcoming Champions League rematch against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu next Wednesday.
