A deadly stampede struck the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj on Wednesday morning as massive crowds gathered for a holy dip on Mauni Amavasya. With pressure mounting due to the Amrit Snan, the Mela administration struggled to manage the surge. Authorities urged devotees to leave the ghats after their bath, but chaos ensued.

Ambulances rushed to the scene, transporting the injured to the central hospital inside the Mela grounds. Sources revealed that at least 15 bodies had arrived at the hospital. Many devotees left without completing their sacred bath.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi immediately called Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to assess the situation. He ordered urgent relief measures and continued monitoring the crisis. Officials confirmed that Modi had spoken to Adityanath twice, emphasizing swift action.

Despite expecting a turnout of 10 crore devotees, the Uttar Pradesh government had strengthened security and crowd management. Authorities issued advisories urging pilgrims to avoid overcrowding. To enhance spiritual fervor, the administration planned to shower 25 quintals of rose petals from helicopters.

Over the past 17 days, more than 15 crore pilgrims have taken a dip at the Mahakumbh Mela. On Tuesday alone, 4.8 crore devotees participated, surpassing the 3.5 crore who attended the Makar Sankranti Amrit Snan.

Security remains tight, with AI-powered CCTV cameras, drones, and personnel deployed across the Mela grounds. Authorities declared the area a no-vehicle zone, urging locals to avoid four-wheelers unless transporting senior citizens.

The Amrit Snan, formerly known as Shahi Snan, is the most sacred ritual of the Mahakumbh Mela, attracting millions from around the world. Mauni Amavasya holds immense significance, as Hindus believe the river waters turn into ‘Amrit’ on this day.

Spiritual leader Jagatguru Sai Maa Lakshmi Devi highlighted the day’s importance, stating that observing silence on Mauni Amavasya aids spiritual growth.

To handle emergencies, the Uttar Pradesh government deployed 1,000 medical professionals, along with 300 specialist doctors at a super-specialty hospital. The Mahakumbh Mela, held every 12 years, began on January 13 and will conclude on Maha Shivaratri, February 26.
