A fast-track court in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, sentenced 25-year-old Mohd Aalim Ahmad to life in prison for unlawful conversion, citing the larger threat of “love jihad.” Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar, in a 42-page judgment, stated that the goal of love jihad is to establish control over India through demographic warfare. He emphasized that this issue should not be taken lightly, linking it to a global conspiracy.
The case began in May 2023, when a 22-year-old woman filed a complaint against Ahmad. She claimed he had posed as Anand Kumar when they met at a coaching session in 2022. They married in a temple, but she later discovered his true identity. Ahmad faced charges of rape, criminal intimidation, and voluntarily causing harm. His father also received a two-year sentence for criminal intimidation.
The woman later changed her statement, alleging pressure from right-wing groups. However, the court rejected her revised testimony, believing it was influenced by Ahmad. The judge argued that illegal conversions through love jihad are widespread and part of a larger syndicate targeting vulnerable groups, including women, children, and marginalized communities, through promises of marriage or employment.
The court warned that these activities, funded by foreign money, pose a serious threat to India’s unity and sovereignty. The ruling compared the situation to Pakistan and Bangladesh, stressing the importance of addressing unlawful conversions to prevent dire consequences for the country’s future. The judge called for immediate government action to curb these practices.
