Lifers for two for committing murder in cold blood
Barasat(North 24 Parganas),(HS): In a judgement of far reaching consequence among the common people,a North 24 Parganas District Court today announced ‘life sentence’ to both the accused in a 2017 murder case, generating contradictory reactions among the people majority of whom demanded death sentence to both for committing the gruesome crime in cold blood.
Announcing the Life sentence for Manua Singha, the wife of Anupam Singha, on charge of murdering her husband, and Ajit Roy, her accomplice, the Barasat District Court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 each on both the criminals for committing such a gruesome murder in cold blood.
Though both the accused claimed that they were innocent and had deliberately been framed for the murder charge, the Court did not believe on the basis of clear evidences against them proving that both of them had indeed been directly involved in the murder of Anupam Singha. The Court did not have any doubt that the murder of Anupam Singh was committed directly by Ajit in close association and support from Anupam’s wife Manua, the judgement said. But the parents and other family member of the deceased(Anupam Singha),who demanded nothing less than the maximum punishment of death sentence to both the criminals, were not happy and expressed their reservations against today’s judgement of the court.
Though we thought that both of them would be sentenced to death, the judges thought otherwise and handed the judgement of Life sentence to both Manua and Ajit in addition to a hefty fine ( of Rs 50,000 each), they said. ‘We shall soon move to the higher court including the Calcutta High Court against today’s judgement to seek the maximum punishment to both’ said the complainant and the mother of Anupam.
It may be recalled that in one of the most talked about criminal cases in the state in recent memory, Manua and Ajit were arrested 13 days after the brutal murder of Anupan Singha in his own house near Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas district on 2 May 2017. The case which was closely followed by large number of people not only in the district but across the state reportedly felt that both the accused deserved not less than the maximum punishment for the heinous crime of murdering an innocent person and that too in cold blood.
