Kharge warns Congress leaders on accountability after Delhi defeat

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge warned top leaders about accountability after the party’s poor performance in Delhi. His remarks came days after Congress failed to win a single seat in the Delhi Assembly elections for the third time in a row.
The losses extended beyond Delhi. Congress struggled in Haryana and Maharashtra and delivered mixed results in Jammu & Kashmir and Jharkhand despite alliances. However, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party nearly doubled its 2019 tally, winning 99 seats.
Kharge addressed Congress office-bearers at Indira Bhawan, the party’s new headquarters. He stressed the importance of accountability and urged leaders to revamp state organizations. “You will be responsible for future election results,” PTI quoted him as saying.
He also cautioned against welcoming defectors from other parties. “Some join in haste but abandon us in tough times. We must avoid such people,” he warned.
On Delhi’s results, Kharge acknowledged voters’ desire for change. He praised the local Congress unit for fighting hard despite limited resources.
Meanwhile, the BJP ended AAP’s decade-long rule and secured its first government in Delhi in 27 years. Congress, which governed Delhi from 1998 to 2013 under Sheila Dikshit, remains far from reclaiming its past dominance.
