Thiruvananthapuram, 22 April (HS): The ruling CPI(M) in Kerala is inching towards a major leadership vacuum as two of its most powerful leaders are suffering from serious ailments and are likely to call it a day soon.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, reportedly suffering from a terminal illness, is all set to emplane to the United States of America for advanced treatment. He is expected to fly away to the imperialist country for medical aid and treatment at the famous Mayo Clinic, the last word in cancer cure. Vijayan’s sojourn to Mayo Clinic may last for a fortnight. The chief minister who does not miss even a minute opportunity to boast Kerala as the global health quarter has opted for medical treatment in the Yankee Imperialist US than the hospitals in his own State. This indicates that he is in an advanced stage of the disease.

Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, the State secretary of the CPI(M) is also leaving Kerala shores for the USA for treatment. For both Vijayan and Balakrishnan, this is the third trip to the imperialist US for treatment. Both of them looked tired and exhausted after the Party Congress which was held at Kannur from April 5 to 10. Sources in Secretariat said that though both were suffering from serious medical issues, they wanted the all-India meet of the party to be over before leaving for the US.

The details of the ailments that have afflicted the chief minister and party secretary have been kept a secret. Nobody is willing to speak about the medical condition of the two top leaders which remains highly confidential. If Vijayan fails to regain health and succumbs to the ailment, chances are that Mohammed Riyaz, the new husband of his daughter Veena, may take over as chief minister. The party leadership has been reconstituted to facilitate the swearing-in of Riyaz a smooth affair. The Left Democratic Front has a new convenor in EP Jaayarajan, a Pinarayi acolyte. P Sasi, accused in many sexual abuse cases, has been made the political secretary of the chief minister. Though nothing much is known about the role of the political secretary, it is widely believed that the latter calls the shots in the department of police as well as law and order issues.
