Kanpur Police on Thursday arrested Shivam Mishra, son of tobacco industrialist KK Mishra, in connection with a high-profile Lamborghini crash that injured six people in the city’s Gwaltoli area. The case has drawn wide attention because of the luxury car involved and the shifting claims over who drove it.

The accident occurred around 3 pm on February 8 on VIP Road. A Lamborghini Revuelto, valued at over ₹10 crore, suddenly lost control. It hit pedestrians and several vehicles. Then, it climbed a divider. Finally, it came to a halt in the busy upscale locality.

Soon after, injured e-rickshaw driver Mohd Taufeeq filed a complaint. Based on his statement, police registered a case against an unknown driver. Later, investigators amended the FIR and named Shivam Mishra as the accused.

On Thursday, police produced Shivam before a local court. The court sent him to police remand. Officials told the court that Shivam failed to cooperate with investigators. They also said he tried to evade questioning. Therefore, they decided to arrest him.

Meanwhile, the case took a dramatic turn a day earlier. A man named Mohan claimed that he drove the car during the crash. He described himself as the designated driver. Speaking to reporters, he said Shivam suffered a seizure moments before the accident.

According to Mohan, Shivam suddenly collapsed on him. As a result, he lost control while trying to manage the vehicle. He said the car first hit a three-wheeler. Then it climbed the divider. After that, it stopped. He also claimed that the automatic locking system delayed his exit. Later, he shifted Shivam to the driver’s seat and stepped out.

Subsequently, Mohan’s lawyer filed a surrender application. Mohan appeared in court to submit himself to police. However, Gwaltoli police did not list him as an accused. Therefore, the court refused to accept his surrender. It also asked the police to submit a detailed report.

Despite Mohan’s claims, police stood firm on their findings. Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal said evidence points clearly at Shivam. He cited CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts, and video clips. These materials, he said, show Shivam driving at the time of impact.

In addition, officers referred to videos that show bystanders pulling a man from the driver’s seat. Investigators believe that man was Shivam. They said this footage strengthens their case.

Meanwhile, police seized the Lamborghini for forensic testing. Experts will examine mechanical systems and electronic data. Investigators hope the results will confirm who controlled the vehicle.

On the defence side, Shivam’s lawyer raised new arguments. Advocate Dharmendra Singh said the complainant no longer wants to pursue the case. He claimed Taufeeq reached a mutual settlement. He also alleged that Mohan paid compensation for medical treatment and damages.

Furthermore, sources said police summoned Taufeeq to the station on the day of the crash. Officials reportedly signed a written settlement in the presence of the then SHO. Later, authorities removed the officer from his post. Senior officials, however, refused to comment on this issue.

Earlier, Shivam’s father told police that a driver was at the wheel. Later, he changed his statement. He said he did not know who drove and called for a full investigation. He also mentioned a technical problem in the car a day before the crash.

Moreover, the family claimed that Shivam suffers from epilepsy and receives treatment in Delhi. They denied allegations of speeding or intoxication. Police rejected these claims. They said technical data and visual evidence place Shivam behind the wheel.

At present, investigators continue to question witnesses and analyze forensic reports. Meanwhile, the court will review fresh submissions. As the probe advances, authorities aim to establish accountability in one of Kanpur’s most controversial road accidents in recent years.
