Jaishankar urges unified action for growth and security in Indian Ocean Region

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called the Indian Ocean region a critical global lifeline during his speech at the 8th Indian Ocean Conference in Muscat. He urged regional countries to unite in their efforts to foster development, connectivity, and security. Jaishankar highlighted that while the region is diverse in terms of history, geography, and culture, it shares a common goal: the well-being of the Indian Ocean. He emphasized the need for coordinated policies to achieve this.
Jaishankar acknowledged the current volatility in global affairs, particularly in the Middle East and West Asia, where ongoing conflicts have disrupted global shipping and impacted regional economies. He warned that these tensions have maritime consequences that demand a united response from the Indian Ocean nations.
On the opposite end, the Indo-Pacific region faces rising tensions and rivalries, adding to the complexity of global affairs. Jaishankar stressed the need for the region to address shared challenges, such as resource constraints, economic difficulties, and debt. He noted that many nations in the region struggle to meet their Sustainable Development Goals, with some facing the consequences of imprudent borrowing and unsustainable projects.
One key issue for the Indian Ocean countries is the restoration of connectivity, which has been disrupted by colonial history. Jaishankar emphasized that connectivity initiatives must be transparent, consultative, and inclusive, rather than unilateral or opaque. He also pointed to the challenges faced by nations in securing their Exclusive Economic Zones, protecting fishing interests, and combating illegal activities and terrorism, all of which have significant maritime implications.
India, Jaishankar noted, plays an active role in addressing these regional challenges. The country has been enhancing its capabilities, strengthening ties with neighboring states, and offering support during crises. India’s leadership and contributions are vital to ensuring the security and development of the Indian Ocean region. Jaishankar’s call to action reflects India’s commitment to advancing maritime partnership and stability in the face of current challenges.
