Italy’s Giorgia Meloni under investigation for releasing Libyan suspect
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Tuesday that she is under judicial investigation over the release of Libyan police officer Osama Elmasry Njeem. Njeem, wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity, was released last week, despite an arrest warrant issued by the ICC.
The surprise decision to release Njeem has prompted the ICC to demand an explanation, claiming they were not consulted prior to the release. Meloni revealed in a social media message that prosecutors suspect her of embezzlement and aiding and abetting a crime related to the case.
However, she stressed that being placed under investigation in Italy does not imply guilt or guarantee formal charges. “I will not be blackmailed, I will not allow myself to be intimidated,” Meloni declared in a Facebook video. “I am disliked by those who do not want Italy to change and become better.”
Justice Minister Carlo Nordio, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, and cabinet undersecretary for intelligence matters Alfredo Mantovano have also been placed under investigation in connection with the decision. Meloni’s government faces scrutiny as authorities probe the actions leading to the unexpected release of Njeem.
While Meloni’s statement defends her position, the investigation has raised questions about Italy’s handling of international law and its relations with the ICC. The situation has fueled political controversy, especially as Meloni continues to push for reform and change within Italy. Despite the investigation, Meloni remains firm in her stance, stating that the pressures she faces only strengthen her resolve to continue her work.
