India’s first underwater metro tunnel is ready, 9 lakh people will travel daily
Kolkata, Jan 29 (HS): Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) is going to complete its country’s first underwater metro tunnel, East-West project soon. This tunnel will connect Kolkata with Howrah. The underwater metro tunnel is almost ready. It is being told that this entire project will be ready by March 2022. This tunnel is built under the Hooghly River of Kolkata.
This metro is being constructed in two phases. The East-West project of Kolkata Metro is about 16 km long which extends from Salt Lake Stadium to Howrah ground. The first phase is 5.5 km long between Salt Lake Sector-5 to Salt Lake Stadium. On this line, Karunamayi, Central Park, City Center and Bengal Chemical Metro Station are present. The second phase is 11 km long of the underground metro.
Experts from Russia and Thailand have been consulted in the construction of this tunnel. At the same time, the world’s best technology has been used to prevent leakage of water. To protect it from water leakage, 3 levels of safety shield have been made. Metro train will be able to run in this tunnel at a speed of 80 km per hour.
Fast work is going on since 2009. Even during the tenure of the current railway minister Piyush Goyal, this work is happening very fast. It is expected that this entire line will start in 2021. Two tunnels are being built here on the up and down lines.
