India Hosts Asia-Pacific’s First Global Standards Symposium
The Fifth Global Standards Symposium (GSS-24) concluded today in New Delhi, marking its first-ever event in the Asia-Pacific region. Organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and hosted by India’s Department of Telecommunications, this landmark symposium gathered 1,500 global policymakers, innovators, and experts to discuss the future of digital transformation. The event highlighted the importance of international standards in driving emerging technologies.
With the theme “Charting the Next Digital Wave: Emerging Technologies, Innovation, and International Standards,” the symposium focused on the need for a unified approach to governing and standardizing new technologies. Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia inaugurated the event, emphasizing India’s role as a global hub for telecommunications and digital innovation.
The high-level sessions facilitated cooperation between industry leaders and ministers, focusing on future innovation and digital public infrastructure. Participants stressed the importance of robust international standards, particularly for AI governance, and called for bridging the standards gap between developed and developing nations to ensure equitable access to technology.
Key discussions explored the role of open-source technologies, blockchain-based authentication, and the impact of AI and the Metaverse on public services and industries. The AI Standards Summit showcased how consensus-based standards can drive innovation across sectors, aiming to create a more inclusive tech ecosystem globally.
