victoria City, Nov 25(HS): A record-breaking 70 percent voting for the District Council took place amid protests in Hong Kong for six months. This trend of voting is being seen as a huge success of anti-government and democratic groups. The election is seen as a power test for Hong Kong leader and chief executive Carrie Lam.

Pro-democracy opposition groups hope that after nearly six months of unrest and opposition to the government, voting will get a message from the Chinese government. In Hong Kong considered a financial hub, pro-democracy candidates have won the first half of 452 Zilla Parishad seats strongly.

When the results started coming after midnight, the pro-Beijing people were upset with the victory of the Democrats. At some polling stations, supporters of democracy were loudly shouting ‘Liberate Hong Kong, Resolution Now’. This slogan has been heard on the streets of Hong Kong for the past six months.  Candidates who won the district council election in Hong Kong said that this victory is the victory of democracy groups. These results are a testimony to the support of the protesters. The result will put pressure on Chief Executive Carrie Lam, who is considered a supporter of China. Hong Kong has been witness to the sit-in demonstrations for more than a decade because of Carrie Lam. Alumni leader Tommy Cheung, who won a seat in the UN Long district bordering China, said, “This is the power of democracy.” This is a democratic tsunami.
