Kolkata, July.16 (HS): After experiencing a long bout of hot and humid weather for nearly a month, the City of Joy and its neighborhood was today greeted with nearly a hour long smart shower this afternoon, bringing down the day time temperature quite considerably.
In accordance with the predictions of the Met office here, the entire skyline over the city was cloudy since this morning following the formation of a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal. But as the day progressed a moderate to heavy rain lashed the city and several South Bengal districts this afternoon to bring the much awaited relief to the people  everywhere.
Though there was no major disruption in life because of the heavy rain, several inches of water got stagnated in several low lying areas of the city including those in Southern Avenue, Park Circus, Moulali, Bowbazar and Central Avenue causing inconveniences to the residents and other people.
However, there was no disruption of  in the movement of traffic in the city or elsewhere, the police said.
It may be recalled that though the entire North Bengal has been experiencing heavy rain during the past few weeks leading to a flood like situation in several districts like Jajpaiguri, Coochbehar and Alipurduar causing misery to millions of people and forcing many of them to take shelter in government buildings, there was not a drop of rain in most of the South Bengal districts since last month causing even some water shortages in some areas.
Large areas in several districts however, continued to remain under water as inclement weather has also claimed several lives during the past few days.
Though the Met office predicts more rain in the city and South Bengal in the coming days, they could not pin point any particular reason for such an abnormal situation so far, while some experts feel that it might be a possible effect of global warming which is changing the weather pattern of the entire world in all continents.
