Heartfelt Welcome: PM Modi gets grand bihari reception at Mauritius Port

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday to a grand welcome from the Indian diaspora. Women from the community honored him with Geet Gawai, a traditional Bihari cultural performance.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla shared visuals of the event on X (formerly Twitter), calling Geet Gawai a “traditional Bhojpuri musical ensemble” that reflects India’s cultural heritage in Mauritius. Modi expressed gratitude on X, saying he was “deeply touched” by the warm reception and praised the diaspora’s strong connection to Indian heritage.
Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam personally welcomed Modi with a garland at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. A delegation of 34 ministers and over 200 dignitaries, including the Deputy Prime Minister, Chief Justice, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Foreign Minister, also greeted him.
Posting on X, Modi thanked Ramgoolam for the special welcome and called the visit “a wonderful opportunity” to strengthen ties and explore new collaborations. Upon reaching his hotel, Modi received another warm reception from the Indian community, who chanted “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and waved the tricolor flag.
During his two-day visit, Modi will inaugurate over 20 India-funded projects, including the Civil Services College building. His agenda includes meetings with President Dharam Gokhool, Prime Minister Ramgoolam, and other key leaders.
Mauritian Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful confirmed that both nations will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a line of credit on March 12. He emphasized the deep ties between India and Mauritius, highlighting India’s support for various development initiatives in the island nation.
Ahead of his trip, Modi called the visit a “new and bright” chapter in bilateral relations, underscoring India’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Mauritius.
