From war of words to aid freeze: Key twists in Trump-Zelensky clash

The US-Ukraine relationship has hit a rough patch following a heated exchange between President Donald Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky. Their argument in the Oval Office has led to major fallout, including the US pausing military aid to Ukraine.
White House Showdown
On February 28, Zelensky met Trump and Vice President JD Vance at the White House. During the meeting, Zelensky challenged Vance on Russia and diplomacy. Vance dismissed his concerns, saying, “You should be thanking the president for trying to end this conflict.” Trump echoed this sentiment, telling Zelensky he lacked leverage in the war and should consider a ceasefire with Putin.
Tensions escalated quickly. The confrontation led to the abrupt cancellation of Zelensky’s remaining meetings and a scheduled press conference with Trump.
Zelensky’s Response
Later, Zelensky appeared on Fox News and admitted the argument was “not good for both sides.” He emphasized that Ukrainians needed reassurance that America remained on their side.
Trump fired back, accusing Zelensky of disrespecting the US in the Oval Office. He stated, “He can come back when he is ready for peace.” Meanwhile, Zelensky thanked world leaders who pledged support for Ukraine in the aftermath of the clash.
Can the Relationship Be Saved?
After meeting with European leaders, Zelensky remained hopeful about US-Ukraine ties. Speaking at London airport, he said, “Our relationship will continue.” He added that he would visit the US if invited for a “constructive dialogue” to address serious issues.
However, he acknowledged that peace talks with Russia remained distant, stating, “An agreement to end the war is still very, very far away.”
Zelensky’s Video Message
On Monday, Zelensky posted a video on X, thanking the US for its support throughout Ukraine’s three-year war with Russia. He stressed Ukraine’s resilience and highlighted the role of international allies in preserving its independence. He also praised European nations for their continued backing.
Trump Strikes Back
Trump responded to Zelensky’s remarks on Truth Social, criticizing his stance on the war. He claimed Zelensky was unwilling to pursue peace as long as he had US and European support. Trump also pointed out that European leaders admitted they couldn’t assist Ukraine without the US.
US Halts Military Aid
A senior defense official told Bloomberg that the US has paused all military aid to Ukraine. The freeze affects all weapons not yet in Ukraine, including shipments in transit. The move signals a shift in US policy, putting pressure on Ukraine to commit to peace talks.
As tensions grow, Ukraine faces an uncertain future. With US support in question, Zelensky must rely on European allies to navigate the next phase of the war.
