‘Former Interpol chief admits guilt in court hearing’

Beijing, Jun.20 (HS): Chinese state media informed that the former Interpol chief Meng Hongwei confessed to his his guilt during a court hearing on Thursday after prosecutors accused him of taking 14.5 million yuan ($2.11 million) in bribes.

However, the court located in the northern city of Tianjin, is to announce its verdict at a later date, the official People’s Daily said. Unfortunately, it is not clear who Meng’s lawyer is and it was not possible to reach him or a legal representative for comment. His wife, who is living in France after being give asylum, has meanwhile said to media there that the charges against him are politically motivated.
A few months ago Meng was, reportedly, kidnapped and later China said that he has been charged of corruption in China.

Former Interpol chief Meng Hongwei had been put on trial for bribery. Official government mouthpiece the People’s Daily claimed Meng had admitted his guilt during a court hearing on Thursday after prosecutors accused him of taking 14.5 million yuan ($2.11m) in bribes. Forced confessions, which are often televised, have become a hallmark of Chinese president Xi Jinping’s increasingly hardline rule, Meng’s wife said to media.
