Former Allahabad MP dies of Covid at 76
PRAYAGRAJ, April 10 (HS): Former MP from Allahabad parliamentary constituency, Shyama Charan Gupta (76) died in the wee hours of Saturday. He and his wife, Jamnotri Gupta were detected Corona positive during Holi. The former MP was rushed to Max Hospital, where he breathed his last in the intervening night of Friday-Saturday. The news of his death spread like wildfire and leaders cutting across party lines thronged his residence to pay their last respect to the departed soul. He was elected MP from Banda in 2004 on a Samajwadi Party ticket. Later, he rejoined BJP ahead of 2014 Lok Sabha polls and got elected from Allahabad parliamentary constituency.
In 2019, Shyama Charan Gupta tried his electoral fortunes from the Samajwadi Party ticket and contested from Banda. Just a little before the 2019 elections, the sitting BJP MP from Allahabad, Shyama Charan had joined the Samajwadi Party to contest unsuccessfully from Banda and defeated by BJP’s RK Singh with a margin of 58,938 votes. He has also served as Mayor of Prayagraj in the early 90s.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. Gupta reported Corona positive on March 31 and was admitted to SRN hospital, Prayagraj but later shifted to Max Hospital, New Delhi after his health started worsening. His wife had also tested Corona positive and currently in home isolation.
