First Corona virus death in Bengal today

Kolkata, 23 March (HS) ; A 58 year old resident of Dum Dum in North Kolkata who was found positive of having Corona virus about a week ago, died here today in a private hospital this afternoon to become the first victim of this deadly disease in West Bengal and second in Eastern India after Bihar
The victim, also a chronic heart patient was admitted to the hospital after he was diagnosed with carrying the killer virus since his return to the city from Jabbalpur in a train along with his family.
Though initially he was showing signs of improvement,his condition deteriorated suddenly this morning before he breathed his last at around  2-30 p.m., this afternoon, sources at the hospital said here without disclosing more details abouty the deceased.
As soon as the news of his death spread, immediate steps were taken by the state health department to trace all the family members and other people with whom the victims came in contact since his return to the city about a week ago.
‘We have come to know that he came in contact with about 45 people on different occasions since his arrival here’, the hospital  sources said adding that all out efforts were now being made to quarantine each of these people,including his family members, and send them in isolation wards to prevent further spread of the disease.
Meanwhile,Chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed serious concern at the death of the first victim of Corona virus in the state and ordered the concerned authorities to take every step to ensure a proper funeral and last rights of the deceased in accordance with the strict guidelines of the union Health ministry.
Announcing the death  in the midst of an All party meeting at State Secretariat Nabanna just prior to the scheduled locked down of the entire state at 5.p.m. today, the Chief minister also expressed her  condolences at the passing away of the 58 year old victim.
It may be stated that the first victim of the state and a resident of Dum Dum area in North Kolkata was among the 7 people who have so far been affected  by the deadly CODIV -19 in West Bengal.
With the death of this 58 year old patient, altogether 8 people have so far lost their lives in Conora Virus across India with another about 415 others being affected till today.
