EU regulators plan to fine Elon Musk’s social media platform X for violating the Digital Services Act (DSA), The New York Times reported. The fine could exceed $1 billion. Officials also demand changes to X’s content moderation policies. The EU will likely announce penalties this summer, marking the first enforcement under the new law.

The move could strain US-EU relations, especially as Trump supports Musk. EU officials continue debating the fine’s size, considering trade tensions and the Ukraine war. X has faced scrutiny since December 2023 for amplifying far-right content and failing to curb illegal material.

The European Commission completed an initial probe in January and demanded X submit internal algorithm documents by February 15. The EU claims X’s lax moderation spreads hate speech and disinformation, threatening democracy across its 27 nations.

A settlement remains possible if X agrees to regulatory changes. However, Musk has criticized EU policies as censorship and may challenge penalties in court. The case could set a precedent for enforcing the DSA and regulating tech giants globally.
