Emergency mindset remain in Congress: Amit Shah
New Delhi, June 25 (HS) The Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday hit out at Congress party saying that there is a democracy in the country but not in congress. He was speaking on the occasion of 45th anniversary of emergency imposed in the country by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Launching a scathing attack on Congress, Amit Shah said, “On this day, 45 years ago one family’s greed for power led to the imposition of the Emergency. Overnight the nation was turned into a prison. The press, courts, free speech … all were trampled over. Atrocities were committed on the poor and downtrodden.”
The Emergency refers to a 21-month period from 1975-77 when former PM Indira Gandhi had a state of emergency declared across India under Article 352 of the Constitution because of the prevailing ‘internal disturbance’. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was the then President of India.
The Home Minister said further, “Due to efforts of lakhs of people, the Emergency was lifted. Democracy was restored in India it remained absent in the Congress. The interests of one family prevailed over party interests and national interests. This sorry state of affairs thrives in today’s Congress too!”
While sharing a media report, Amit Shah said that some senior leaders tried to raise few issues in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held recently, but they were shouted down. Similarly, party’s leader Sanjay Jha was shunted out after he wrote an article that the Congress President Sonia Gandhi found objectionable.
Shah said, “As one of India’s opposition parties, Congress need to ask itself: Why does the Emergency mindset remain? Why are the leaders who don’t belong to one dynasty unable to speak up? Why are leaders getting frustrated in Congress? Else, their disconnect with people will keep widening.”
