Economic survey to hit Parliament today: What’s in this pre-budget blueprint?

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Economic Survey in Parliament today at 12 pm. The survey outlines the economy’s performance over the last fiscal year and provides projections for the next. It will be tabled in Lok Sabha at noon and in Rajya Sabha at 2 pm.
This survey sets the stage for the Union Budget 2025-26, which will be presented tomorrow. Prepared under the supervision of the Chief Economic Advisor, the document includes insights from the economic division of the Department of Economic Affairs.
Besides analyzing the economy’s current state, the survey hints at possible policy directions in the upcoming budget. It also helps shape discussions during the Budget Session, which starts today and runs until April 4, with a break from February 14 to March 10.
Each year, the survey follows a central theme. In 2024, the theme was economic resilience. The chosen theme often reflects the government’s policy focus in the Union Budget. Since its inception in 1950-51, the survey was initially part of budget documents but became a separate presentation in the 1960s.
Before the budget is presented, the Prime Minister leads a Cabinet meeting where ministers receive a final briefing and approve the budget. Additionally, President Droupadi Murmu will address a joint parliamentary session today, marking the formal start of the budgetary process.
