The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted three flight-tests of the 4th Generation Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) at Pokhran Field Firing Ranges on October 3 and 4, 2024. These tests demonstrated the system’s ability to intercept high-speed targets at maximum range and altitude. DRDO’s trials proved the hit-to-kill capability of the missile in various scenarios, including approaching, receding, and crossing targets.

VSHORADS, a Man Portable Air Defence System, was designed and developed indigenously by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and production partners. This system is a critical component of India’s efforts toward self-reliance in defense, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat.’ Two production agencies were involved in the Development cum Production Partner (DcPP) mode, and the missiles used in these tests were produced through this initiative. This success paves the way for early user trials and mass production in the near future.

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Armed Forces, and the industry for the successful tests, noting that this modern missile would strengthen India’s defense capabilities against aerial threats. Secretary of Defence R&D and DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat also praised the teams involved for their achievements.

This successful test marks a significant milestone in advancing India’s defense technology. It highlights the collaboration between DRDO, the Armed Forces, and the industry in enhancing India’s air defense systems. The VSHORADS missile, equipped with cutting-edge technology, is set to provide a crucial boost to India’s military strength, ensuring greater preparedness against aerial threats in the future.
