Delhi woke up to dense fog on Saturday, disrupting flights and trains. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of “very dense fog,” with the minimum temperature at 7°C and maximum at 19°C. The fog reduced visibility, slowing transportation and creating challenges for commuters.

The IMD forecast predicts the foggy conditions will persist for the next three days. It also expects rain or thunderstorms on January 22 and 23, adding to the city’s weather woes. Residents experienced the chill as the temperature hovered around 11°C at 7:30 am, intensifying the winter’s grip.

Flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport faced delays, frustrating passengers. Several trains heading to Delhi were also delayed, disrupting travel plans. Authorities urged travelers to check schedules before heading to stations or the airport.

On a brighter note, Delhi’s air quality improved after recent rainfall. The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 248 at 8 am, placing it in the “poor” category. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) lifted restrictions under Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) due to this improvement.

The GRAP, a seasonal framework, regulates activities based on air quality levels in Delhi-NCR. It divides air pollution into four stages: Stage 1 (Poor, AQI 201-300), Stage 2 (Very Poor, AQI 301-400), Stage 3 (Severe, AQI 401-450), and Stage 4 (Severe Plus, AQI above 450). The recent rainfall and strong winds helped lower pollution levels, offering temporary relief.

The IMD and IITM project that favorable weather and high wind speeds will keep the AQI in the lower end of the “Very Poor” category in the coming days. However, foggy conditions may increase localized pollution, particularly in congested areas.

Residents face a mixed scenario with improved air quality but continued travel disruptions. Authorities remain on high alert to manage transportation issues and monitor weather conditions. With rain on the horizon, Delhiites brace for more changes in the city’s already unpredictable winter weather.

While the dense fog disrupts daily life, the respite from extreme air pollution brings a small silver lining. Travelers should stay updated on flight and train schedules and plan accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
