Delhi SWAT Commando’s death sparks dowry torture allegations, murder probe intensifies
Delhi Police has launched a murder investigation after the death of a 27-year-old SWAT commando triggered outrage and fresh debate on dowry violence. Kajal Chaudhary, a Special Weapons and Tactics operative, died on January 27 after days of alleged assault by her husband, Ankur Chaudhary. Her family has accused her in-laws of relentless dowry harassment that continued despite substantial gifts at the time of marriage.
Kajal married Ankur in November 2023. Ankur worked as a clerk in the Ministry of Defence and held a posting in Delhi Cantonment. From the start, the marriage showed signs of strain. Kajal’s parents claim that demands for dowry never stopped. They say pressure increased even after they gave valuables well beyond their means.
According to Kajal’s father, Rakesh Chaudhary, the family provided a Bullet motorcycle, gold jewellery, and cash during the wedding. However, the demands did not end. He alleged that the groom’s family compared Kajal unfavourably to other brides and complained that Ankur could have received a car if he had married someone else. Later, Kajal herself arranged a car in an attempt to restore peace. Even then, harassment continued, her family said.
Meanwhile, Kajal’s mother described frequent arguments between the couple. She claimed the family spent nearly ₹20 lakh on the marriage and took loans to meet expectations. She also alleged that Ankur took ₹5 lakh from Kajal. She described her daughter’s suffering and demanded strict punishment. She called her son-in-law a monster and said she wanted justice.
The situation turned fatal on January 22. Kajal, who was four months pregnant, allegedly faced a violent attack inside her home. Her family alleged that Ankur slammed her head against a door frame and struck her with a dumbbell. The assault caused severe head injuries and multiple wounds across her body.
At the same time, Kajal’s brother Nikhil experienced the violence through a phone call. He said Kajal had begun sharing details of her ordeal that day. During the call, Ankur allegedly grew angry and snatched the phone. Nikhil claimed Ankur then issued a chilling warning. He allegedly told Nikhil to record the call for police evidence and said he was killing Kajal, while asserting that the police could not touch him. Nikhil said he heard his sister scream before the call ended.
Doctors later declared Kajal brain-dead. Medical teams told the family that treatment would not reverse the damage. Kajal died on January 27. After her death, police changed the charge against Ankur from attempted murder to murder.
Investigators have taken Ankur Chaudhary into custody. Police officials continue to examine allegations against other family members. The family has demanded action against everyone involved in the alleged harassment.
The case has reignited public anger over dowry-related abuse, especially within educated and salaried households. Activists and former police officials have called for swift justice and stronger safeguards for women in uniform. As the investigation continues, Kajal’s family hopes the case will send a clear message that dowry violence will not escape the law.
