Delhi’s cold wave is set to intensify this week as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts temperatures will plunge to 5°C by Friday. Starting Wednesday, minimum temperatures will drop steadily, marking a significant shift in the capital’s weather.

The Safdarjung Observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 16.2°C on Wednesday, slightly above the seasonal average. The minimum temperature stood at 10.5°C, 3.6°C higher than usual for January. Relative humidity ranged between 87% and 92%, adding to the winter chill.

Even as temperatures fall, Delhi’s air quality shows signs of improvement. On Monday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 335, classified as “very poor.” However, favourable meteorological conditions, including increased wind speeds, have helped disperse pollutants.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) noted a decline in pollution levels, prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to revoke Stage 3 restrictions of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR.

The CAQM’s decision followed a week of poor air quality that had triggered stringent anti-pollution measures. While Stage 3 restrictions are now lifted, Stage 1 and Stage 2 curbs remain in effect.

What Does GRAP Mean for Delhi Residents?

GRAP, a set of emergency measures to combat air pollution, activates different stages based on AQI levels.

  • Stage 1 begins when AQI crosses 200 (“poor”).
  • Stage 2 activates at 300 (“very poor”).
  • Stage 3 involves stricter actions when AQI exceeds 400 (“severe”).

With AQI now below 400, the revocation of Stage 3 curbs eases limits on construction, industrial activities, and vehicular emissions in the region.

As temperatures drop, residents should prepare for harsher weather. IMD’s forecast signals a chilly week ahead, with the minimum temperature dipping steadily. Layers of warm clothing and proper heating arrangements will be essential for navigating Delhi’s increasingly cold mornings and evenings.

While the cold wave deepens, improving air quality provides a silver lining. Experts credit enhanced wind speeds and favourable weather conditions for reducing pollution levels. However, residents should remain cautious and monitor AQI updates, as cold weather often traps pollutants closer to the ground.

Delhi faces a week of contrasts—a plummeting mercury and a breath of cleaner air. Stay warm, stay informed, and keep an eye on the skies.
