Delhi Pollution: CM Atishi staggers govt office timings to ease traffic

Delhi’s air quality remains in the ‘severe’ category for the fourth day, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) hitting 406. Smog blankets the city, causing respiratory issues, eye irritation, and other health concerns. Hotspots like Kalindi Kunj reported AQI levels above 414, while Pragati Maidan recorded 357, classified as ‘very poor.’ Toxic foam also covered parts of the Yamuna near Okhla Barrage.

To combat the crisis, Delhi’s government invoked Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Measures include bans on BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles, with violators facing ₹20,000 fines. Diesel medium goods vehicles and light commercial vehicles from outside Delhi are also restricted, except for essential services. Interstate buses must use CNG, electric, or BS-VI engines unless under a tourist permit.

GRAP-III also enforces strict bans on demolition, earth excavation, and transporting construction waste. Road sweeping and water sprinkling intensified in pollution hotspots. Public transport capacity has increased with 106 additional buses and more metro trips.

To reduce congestion, Chief Minister Atishi announced staggered office timings. Central government offices will operate from 9 am to 5:30 pm, Delhi government offices from 10 am to 6:30 pm, and MCD offices from 8:30 am to 5 pm. Delhi LG VK Saxena approved the plan, criticizing the delay in its implementation.

Schools for students up to Class 5 will shift to online classes. Private construction activities remain suspended, but essential government projects continue. Over 280 transport department officials are enforcing these measures.
