Farmers from Punjab, under the banners of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, plan to march to Delhi on December 6. In response, Delhi Police stated on Thursday that they are ready to handle any situation at the Singhu border. However, no additional security has been deployed yet.
A senior police officer explained their approach. “We have planned significant deployment at the Singhu border on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway. We are monitoring the situation and will adjust based on any intelligence inputs or developments,” the officer said. Local police at Singhu are already managing law enforcement and implementing GRAP-4 measures.
Farmers have camped at Punjab’s Shambhu and Khanauri borders. Their demands include a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), a debt waiver, pensions for farmers and laborers, and no hike in electricity tariffs. They also seek justice for victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence and compensation for families of farmers who died during the 2020-21 protests.
This march follows earlier attempts in February when security forces stopped farmers at the Punjab-Haryana borders. Ambala’s district administration urged farmers on Wednesday to reconsider the protest and seek permission from Delhi Police. However, Delhi Police confirmed no such requests had been made. Authorities in Ambala have invoked Section 163 of BNSS, prohibiting gatherings of five or more people, and issued notices near the Shambhu border.
Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher reassured authorities about the march. He said a delegation had informed Ambala police of their plans and assured them that the protest would remain peaceful, without disrupting traffic.
The police remain on alert as the protest nears, aiming to balance law enforcement with farmers’ rights to peaceful demonstration.
