Death toll in cyclone Bulbul goes up to 8 in Bangladesh
New Delhi/Dhaka, Nov.11 (HS): The death toll during the cyclonic storm Bulbul in Bangladesh has gone up to 8. This was confirmed by the Disaster Management Ministry in Dhaka last night.
However, the count may go up as the reports are still coming in from cyclone affected areas. Thousands of thatched houses have been damaged. Electric supply is disrupted in many parts of the cyclone affected areas. Normal life is slowly resuming as weather has improved in most parts of the country.
Dhaka has a bright sunny Monday morning though it rained intermittently in some parts of the country overnight The process of assessment of damage has been started.
Loss of cattle, household possession and other items of the affected people is being estimated. In the Sundarbans area, senior officials of the Forest department said that the impact of the cyclone was reduced due to the Sundarban forests which slowed down the ferocity of winds lashing the inner parts of the country.
Army, Navy, Coast guard, police personnel and large number of volunteers are engaged in providing relief to the affected people. Government had made arrangements for food, drinking water, medicine and other necessary items for the cyclone affected people in the coastal and other affected districts. More than 2 million people were evacuated to cyclone shelters prior to the cyclone entering Bangladesh on Saturday night.
Government said that the loss of life was minimised due to the proactive steps taken at evacuation of the people from these areas. Air services from the Chattogram airport has started functioning. Sea ports at Chattogram has started normal functioning and other sea ports like Mongola will resume work from today.
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) announced that river transport services will resume on all routes across Bangladesh on Monday.
