Corona effect:UP hikes tax on petrol,diesel and liquor
Lucknow,May 06(HS)The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday hiked tax on petrol,diesel and liquor to fill the revenue gap created by lockdown to contain Coronavirus.
As a result of increase in tax,one has to pay one rupee more for purchase of petrol and two rupees more for diesel.Higher prices will have to be also paid for buying liquor.
Guzzlers in the state will not be affected as much as those in Delhi.The hike in UP range from Rs 10 to Rs 30 on ordinary liquor.The Delhi government has hiked the duty by 70 per cent.
Purse string has to be loosed more,however,for premium products. Additional Rs 20 or 50 will have to be paid on these products.Imported liquor will demand Rs 100 to Rs 400 extra.
The state will collect additional revenue to the tune of Rs 2350 crore during the current financial year due to the hike.
As far as petrol and diesel prices are concerned,petrol will be available at Rs 73.91 a litre and diesel at Rs 62.86.The increase will take effect from midnight tonight.
A government spokesman said collection was only to the tune of Rs 1178 crore in April this year as against the demand of over Rs 12,000 crore.The revenue collection is unlikely to be much higher this month.Increase in taxes was,therefore,unavoidable.
